Neighborhoods

Downtown:

  • The city center and business hub of Portland. Unlike most American cities, the Downtown is lived in and active throughout the day and evening.
  • As all MAX lines, the Streetcar and many bus lines go through Downtown, it is the best connected district in Portland
  • All of Downtown lies within the Fareless Square
  • Apartments: $800-$1500
  • Condos: $250K-$600K

Old Town/Chinatown:

  • One of the oldest parts of Portland, the Old Town is being revitalized but currently deals with a high crime rate and homeless population.
  • Many great clubs and bars can be found in Old Town.
  • Union Station is located in Old Town
  • The Chinese Garden is located in Old Town
  • Most of Old Town is located within the Fareless Square and has excellent transportation options
  • Apartments: $600-$1200
  • Condos:$200K-$350K

Pearl District:

  • A recently revitalized neighborhood converted from an old industrial/warehouse district. The Pearl now contains some of the most expensive condos in Portland and has a very young, hip, professional vibe.
  • Lots of great cafes, restaurants, and high end stores like Whole Foods
  • The Streetcar and many buses connect the Pearl district, but no MAX lines go through it
  • Half of the Pearl District is located within the Fareless Square
  • Apartments: $1000-$2000
  • Condos: $350K-$1M

Northwest District:

  • A quiet residential neighborhood with older buildings, tall trees and single family homes. There are almost no tall buildings in the area, as residents prefer to keep the skyline under the trees.
  • There are only 2-3 commercial streets with trendy cafes and restaurants, but this creates a vibrant concentration of shoppers and diners.
  • The northern tip of the Streetcar line ends here and connects the Northwest to the Pearl and Downtown.
  • The Northwest is outside of the Fareless Square
  • Connected to Forest Park, the largest park green space in the city
  • Apartments: 600-$1200
  • Homes: $300K-$700K

Goose Hollow:

  • This is a mainly residential neighborhood with a mix of large apartment buildings and single family homes, but also contains a mix of commercial buildings and PGE Park (Baseball Stadium).
  • The residential portion of Goose Hollow is built on the slope of a hill, so be prepared to a lot of steep walks here.
  • Access to Washington Park, the Oregon Zoo and the Japanese Garden
  • Goose Hollow is outside of the Fareless Square
  • Apartments: $700-$1300
  • Homes/Condos: $300K-$1.3M

Sunnyside/Hawthorne

  • This is a mainly residential neighborhood with single family homes.
  • Although not connected to the MAX, there are plenty of frequent buses.
  • Apartments: $700-$1200
  • Homes/Condos: $250K-450K

Lloyd District

  • This is a primarily commercial area located around the Lloyd Center (Mall), the Rose Garden (Stadium) and the Oregon Convention Center. The housing mainly consists of apartment buildings and condos.
  • Partially in the Fareless Square and connected by all MAX lines
  • Apartments: $700-$1200
  • Homes/Condos: $200K-$500K
